Where do you get your Hair Inspiration from?

Back in the day, hair inspiration came primarily from the few black celebrities we saw in the media, or better yet, those magazines that sit on the waiting-area tables at the salon. You know the ones I’m talking about, with the beautifully-intricate braided styles?

Now, we are incredibly lucky that we can find hair inspiration in so many places. Whether you are looking for a new hairstyle to try out, want to imagine what a hair color would look like on you, or simply want a collage of images to bring to your stylist, the resources are bountiful.

While you could always just type the phrase “hair inspiration” in Google, you’ll probably end up sifting through a lot of content to find what you’re looking for. So what do we suggest? Take a look:

You probably have a go-to list of Instagram goddesses that you worship, following their every look, and making lists of those you want to recreate. Instagram is a platform where people are sharing their pictures in real-time, so it’s easy to see what’s on trend.

If you already know what you are looking for, hashtags will be your best friend. #HavanaTwists, #Boxbraids, #CrochetBraids are some of the hottest hashtag searches for inspo.

Youtube is another key source in finding beauty inspiration. Where there is a lack of people of color in mainstream media, there is less so in the Youtube world.

Youtube is a place where many melanated beauties are sharing their voice, their creativity, and their individual style. No wonder it makes such a great place to find new ideas for a new look.

Pinterest

While it’s easy to get lost in Pinterest-Land for hours on end if you don’t give yourself a time limit, it really is the perfect place to curate your visions. It works well for two reasons.

First, you can choose from the thousands of images already on the site, or add your own to create the perfect hairstyle board of your creation. Second, for those thinking “ain’t nobody got time for that”, there are so many boards already complete for you to follow! There is a Pinterest board in existence for almost every topic, especially for hair.

Find a stylist and browse their work

Another way to get inspired is to look at the work a stylist in your area has already created. While you can definitely search up their profiles on some of the above platforms, it’s hard to find stylists that are actually in your vicinity.

Using a stylist app like Ebena will allow you to find local stylists, as well as check out their previous work in their gallery. It’s the best way to make an informed decision, and know that the stylist can successfully pull off the style of your dreams!

So go ahead, put your vision-board together! Assemble a mood board! Go get your ‘inspo’ on, find a stylist near you, and switch up your look!
